Tug Hill – Winona Forest (12k / 25k classical ski races)

The Tug Hill Plateau near Sandy Pond has the highest average annual snowfall of any region in the US east of the Rockies. The Tug Hill Ski Club ( www.tughillskiclub.com ) maintains a very extensive trail system with machine grooming and set tracks on much of the trail system. This trip coincides with the THSC “Try It” race so you may chose to enter a citizen race* at distances of 12 km (about 7.5 miles) or 25 km or you may chose to watch the racers go off and then ski off in a different direction. We’ll stop at Syracuse’s Dinosaur Barbeque on the way home for dinner. 7:30 AM departure to accommodate racers, contact trip leader for meeting location.

*citizen race – an event for persons who mostly aren’t serious racers and who’s primary training regiment consists of 12 oz curls.

Oakley Corners State Forest

On a hilltop with one of the highest elevations in Tioga County, Oakley Corners frequently has snow when there isn’t much in the Triple Cities. Oakley has about 12 miles of trails maintained by the TCSC (yeah Al!). Meet at 12:00 at Oakley Corners, corner of Dutchtown and Hullsville Roads.

Highland Forest (rental skis available!)

Highland Forest, an Onondaga County Park east of Tully, has one of the nicest trail systems for skiing in Central NY.  Never mind that it has about 15 miles of trails ideal for skiing.  As cross country skiers we get excited when we visit destinations with indoor plumbing. The recently constructed Timberline Lodge features not only flush toilets, but a cafeteria with seating for 160, and a spectacular view over a sledding hill so stupidly steep that they won’t let you take it from the top anymore.  Highland offers rental ski packages and some good beginner oriented trails.  Meet at 9:00 at Chi Chi’s parking lot to carpool.

Dorchester Park – Crappie Derby

Admit it, you’ve always wanted to understand the attraction of ice fishing. We won’t be ice fishing but there will be plenty of it going on as we ski up the lake and join in one of the Southern Tier’s signature events. Take this rare opportunity to sit at a picnic table sipping hot cocoa in the middle of a frozen lake. It’s fun. Really. ( www.crappiederby.com ) Meet at 10:00 behind the Whitney Point HS.

Tug Hill TourathonWinona Forest (12k / 25k / 50k ski races)

The Tug Hill Tourathon features racing or touring over distances from 12k to stupid long.  The Tug Hill Ski Club describes it as “a big party where some people ski fast”.  Whether you chose to race or tour, you’ll find cocoa, cookies, and other goodies at the finish line and a dinner buffet after the event.  Contact trip leader for meeting times.
