Bike and Dine 2009 - Saturday, October 10

TCSC Bike and Dine 2009. Saturday, October 10.  Road biking event that will start and end in Marathon and we'll dine at the Three Bear Inn afterwards.  (It's their Prime Rib Buffet night!)

There are several distances and ride intensities to choose from ranging from 0, 9, 18 or 42 miles. All routes will pass Greek Peak.  We'll stop there for a break and we will have a brief, guided tour of the new hotel complex and indoor water park that is nearing completion.

Two options starting in Marathon:
Marathon parking lot between the river and ball fields at the end of Peck Ave.
(42 miles) Meet at 12:15 p.m. for a 12:30 start (Marathon, Cortland, Dryden, Virgil, Greek)
(18 miles) Meet at 2:00 p.m. for a 2:15 start (Marathon directly to Greek) (Route Map)

Easier option starting at the intersection of Rt 11 and Rt 392:
(9 miles) Meet at 2:15 p.m. for a 2:30 start (Rt 392 directly to Greek) (Route Map)

Really easy option:
(Zero miles) Drive your car to Greek Peak and meet at 3 p.m. for the tour

The Tour:
The tour of the new lodging and water park facilities will begin when all the bike groups arrive at Greek Peak.  That will be between 3 and 3:15 p.m.  (If one group arrives at Greek before the others, you can just keep riding along Rt 392 until you see the other group coming towards you.  Then make a U-turn and all ride to Greek Peak together as one large group.)

Dinner:
All groups meet at The Three Bear Inn on Rt 11 in Marathon at (or before) 5 p.m.
Please RSVP with Tim Hanna for an accurate reservation count.

Cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors (60 and over), and $3 for children under 12 (yes, kids are welcome!).  If we get more than ten people,  there will be a group discount of a dollar off each ticket.

Hiking and Snowshoeing

A Special Note About Sign Ups For Hikes and Snowshoeing Outings
While not required, advance notice to the Hiking and Snowshoeing coordinator(s) is recommended—you’ll get the details about departure time, the availability of carpooling for those who choose to carpool, and directions to the trailhead.

Tips And Other Information: (See other tips at the end of this section)

  • Bring plenty of water for the trail—about 10 oz. for each hour of hiking
  • Bring a lunch—we usually eat lunch at the summit
  • Refuel after the hike by having dinner with other TCSC hikers and snowshoers at a restaurant on the way home.  (Remember to bring money for dinner.)
  • If the weather looks questionable, contact the Hiking and/or Snowshoeing coordinator(s).
  •

Triple Cities Ski Club Hiking and Snowshoeing Schedule

    2009/2010

September 26, 2009. Schunemunk, Hudson Highlands, Newburgh, NY. Beautiful views of the Hudson River and surrounding mountains on this 7 mile loop hike.

October 11, 2009. Baldwin Point, Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Slate Run, PA. Fall foliage colors and nice views on this 7.3 mile hike around the rim of the Pine Creek Gorge.

Saturday 12/5/09 – Mount Prospect Moonlight Hike.  Meet at 6PM, Sunrise Terrace McDonald’s, I-81 Exit 5.  We will hike or snowshoe around the top of the mountain for about four miles, taking in aerial views of beautiful city lights along the way.  Possible dinner option after the hike for interested participants.  Contact Ron Brink (hikingbrinkster@yahoo.com) beforehand if rain is in the weather forecast, or if there are any questions.  Please indicate your name and telephone number.

Saturday 1/09/10 – Greenwood Park X-Country Ski.  Meet at 10AM, Wegman’s north lot (nearest Harry L. Drive) in Johnson City.  We will x-country ski about five miles around the groomed trails of this pretty park in northwestern Broome County.  Non-skiers are free to hike or snowshoe if they wish.  There is a small trail fee to use the Greenwood trails and $1 is requested from carpool participants to help drivers pay for gas.  Greenwood has a nice warming area in the headquarters building and ski rentals are available.  If there is no snow, we will do a hike instead.  Possible lunch option after the trip.  Contact Ron Brink (hikingbrinkster@yahoo.com) beforehand for details.  Please indicate your name and telephone number.

In all cases, participants should check with the trip leader for details on the departure point, time of departure, the level of difficulty for each hike and suggestions on what to bring. Participants should be in reasonable physical shape. If the weather looks questionable, contact the trip leader the day before a hike to see if it will be postponed or not. See the TCSC Web site or newsletter for basic hiking suggestions and other “rules of the road”.

Notes: Trips are by carpooling as much as possible.  Call the trip leader (Ron Brink in most cases, whose number is listed in the SNOWPLOW newsletter) for the location of the gathering point and the time of departure.  Call Ron if the weather forecast looks questionable for the day of a hike.  Hikers should be in reasonable physical shape and be properly equipped.  Call Ron for equipment suggestions and for more details on the difficulty levels of individual hikes.   Hikers who are not dressed appropriately for safety, are not properly equipped or do not have adequate experience may be turned away from the day’s hike at the hike leader’s discretion.  Hiking involves certain inherent hazards, and persons participating do so at their own risk.

    Meeting Place:
Call Ron Brink at the number is listed in the SNOWPLOW newsletter.
Transportation is by carpooling.  Be sure to bring money for dinner after the hike.

    Hiking Gear:
Hikers should have sturdy boots, since trails can sometimes have rocks, tree roots and mud.  Day hikers should bring a lunch to eat on the trail, snacks and lots of water.  Mountain summits can be cooler and windier than surrounding valleys, so a jacket is a good thing to bring along, especially during the spring and fall seasons when the weather is more changeable.  Other useful equipment includes a flashlight and/or headlight, whistle and emergency poncho or “space blanket”.  Contact the trip leader if weather conditions on the day of the hike look questionable or if you would like more information on the hike itself (expected trail conditions, degree of difficulty, what to bring, etc.). Weekend hikes require motel reservations; contact the trip leader for more details.

    Feb 20 - Feb 27 - TCSC's 2010 Western Trip
    Steamboat Springs, Colorado!

A week at Steamboat Colorado with its "Champagne Powder!"  The trip package includes air and ground transportation, lodging at the Phoenix (in the base village close to the gondola,) lift tickets, parties, picnics, Nastar race and a very classy banquet.  The Breckenridge trip was a week of adventure and luxury last year.  Be sure to sign up for Steamboat for 2010!

See fliers and reservation form below.  TCSC members choose the "no-air" prices and usually the "2 in a room" options.  Those options cost between $960 and $1050 and the flight out of BGM is $517 plus luggage charges (usually about $40 - 50 each way)  Flights out of SYR are running $400 - 540 right now and the prices are increasing daily.  Our first group (with flight prices locked in) is flying out of SYR.  (You can fly from wherever you want.)

So the total trip cost based on double occupancy and flight out of Binghamton = $1360-1590 (plus luggage charges.)  Trip insurance is available for about $75 through a link on the NJSC Web site.  Flights for TCSC members will be booked through the trip's travel agency, Sports America, Inc.  This will work the same as last year, which turned out to be pretty smooth.

Signing up is easy.  Contact Tim Hanna for more information.
